More about D. Hurwitz
Hurwitz has been doing woodworking since the age of six, and has been a professional woodworker since 1988. He has a BFA (1992) in woodworking and furniture design from the School for American Craftsmen at Rochester Institute of Technology, in Rochester New York. This was a four-year intensive program, with training that included building pieces entirely with hand tools, drawing, painting, rendering, 2-D and 3-D design, art history, furniture history and liberal arts. He also did a two year independent study in sculpture during that time that included work in metal casting, concrete casting, welding and mixed media.
Hurwitz has worked at cabinet, furniture, and architectural woodwork shops in Wilmington, Delaware, Saranac, New York, and Asheville and Penland, North Carolina. He has been a self-employed furniture maker since 1993, specializing in one of a kind, contemporary hardwood furniture. His home and studio are in Randolph, VT
Hurwitz's work often incorporates sculptural elements that are carved and shaped, along with traditional methods of furniture construction and joinery. His work has been exhibited widely in galleries, and museums throughout the US, and is in public and private collections throughout the US, and in private residences in England and Canada.
Hurwitz has been the recipient of several awards and honors including most recently, the Member’s choice Award, and the Second Prize Award from the show: Around The Looking Glass, at the Wharton Esherick Museum in Paoli, Pennsylvania.
