How to Order
The basis for this piece of wood art began with the discovery of the magnificent piece of rare Gabon Ebony (Diospyrus crassiflora) that created the back of this work of art. Gabon Ebony, the blackest of all ebonies occasionally exhibits some brown streaks (some of these can be seen on the back surface of the chair back). However, one of the most unusual patterns for such brown inclusions is that known as ‘honeycomb’. Prominent on the forward-facing plane of the chair back, this rare pattern is reminiscent of the natural honeycomb found in feral African beehives. As you look at the back, imagine that you are peering inside of a hollow tree that is home to an industrious beehive.
To compliment the ebony chair back, a piece of highly figured Claro black Walnut (Juglans hindsii) was used to create the seat. Gabon Ebony has also been utilized for the butterfly keys used to stabilize areas that could otherwise crack or split.
Hand-turned Claro black Walnut has been used to fashion the whimsical, descending cone-shaped legs. The legs have been ebonized to compliment the overall design of the chair.
Lacking lower support members, the success of the chair’s design depends upon precise hand-fit blind wedged mortise-and-tenon joints (Japanese jigoku-kusabi joinery technique) for attachment of the legs to the seat slab.
The chair has been hand finished with a durable oil-varnish to highlight the natural color and protect the beautiful character of the dark timbers while giving the chair a warm feeling to the touch. As with all of his wood art pieces the title of the piece, creation date and artist information has been permanently stamped on the underside of the piece.
