How to Order

This coffee table was built for a small space in a smallish room. It was designed in the Shaker style. It is intended to be a simple, quiet piece which emphasizes the beautiful Birdseye Maple top. The base is of plain Hard Maple. Turner prefers not to use figured woods for legs and aprons, feeling that overuse of ornamentation can be a distraction.

Birdseye Maple is one of the several Figured Maples that Alan works with. Other Figured Maples include curly (also known as tiger) and quilted. A starting coat of boiled linseed oil emphasizes the chatoyant nature of this fine wood. Varnish to finish insures that this table will stand up to the brew it was named for, as well as others.

Turner makes his own dowels. These are of Ebony, and are used to pin the tenons of the apron to leg joints. Probably not necessary for strength, they do provide a bit of visual interest, and are in keeping with the historic design of tables of this type. When working Ebony and Maple as a combination, it is necessary to use only a hand plane to trim the Ebony dowels, lest the black sanding dust of the Ebony dowels stain the light colored Maple. Planing ebony end grain requires a sharp tool.

The quirk bead is hand scraped with a beading tool which Turner made. As an historic matter, these were typically made by the furniture maker himself as many different styles are needed. They are rather easier to make than one might at first suspect.
